______________
Cinco de Mayo is today, May 5 Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates a victory by Mexican troops in La Batalla de Puebla, not Mexican Independence Day, as is often mistakenly believed. ______________ Cinco de Mayo Celebrates Las Vegas' Origins When, in 1829, Mexican scout Rafael Rivera veered off the path to Los Angeles to look for water in the desert and discovered Las Vegas, he had no idea of the entertainment oasis that it would eventually grow into. Today, celebrating its 100th birthday, that oasis in the desert is now paying respect to Rivera -- as well as honoring all Mexicans as it drinks in all the growth that they have been a part of -- with the greatest Mexican event in Las Vegas history. The Cinco de Mayo Centennial Celebration Event at Thomas & Mack on Friday, May 6, sanctioned by the Las Vegas Centennial Committee, will be responsible for some other "firsts" -- three of Mexico's most renowned entertainers will appear on the same stage for the first time ever and El Lucha Libre, a theatrical stunt show second in popularity in Mexico only to soccer, will be presented live in Las Vegas for the first time ever. The six-and-a-half hour event will also be videotaped for worldwide distribution. ___ May 5th, Cinco de Mayo Casino Specials:Triple points at Orleans, Gold Coast and Suncoast. LANCE
BURTON CELEBRATES 10 MAGICAL YEARS This June, Lance Burton celebrates 10 years of magic at the Monte Carlo Resort & Casino. From his sleight-of-hand tricks to vanishing cars, Burton’s illusions have kept Monte Carlo audiences spellbound for a decade. With plenty of new tricks up his sleeve, the master magician introduces new cutting-edge magic that will leave fans in amazement. On June 21, Burton will unveil his latest creation “The Solid Gold Lady.” After working five years to perfect this illusion, Burton will amaze audiences as he attempts to make $10 million in gold bricks disappear. Borrowed each night from the Monte Carlo vault and hand delivered to the stage by armed security, this is the most expensive and amazing illusion in Burton’s career. “It took years of research and development to bring this illusion to the stage,” said Lance Burton, Master Magician. “Randy Morton and everyone at Monte Carlo have been extremely cooperative. At the last minute, there was one little snag in the procedure. Because of insurance concerns, I am not allowed to physically touch the gold! This is going to make the illusion much harder to accomplish but I am not taking this personally; I am not allowed to play blackjack in the casino either. Keep your fingers crossed!” “At first I thought Lance was joking when he asked us to provide him with $10 million dollars in gold,” said Randy Morton, president of Monte Carlo. “He eventually convinced me that this was for real and I agreed to go along with him. I had only one condition…I made him promise to bring the gold back at the end of the evening.” Burton said, “I am thrilled to introduce this trick during the special anniversary performance. I think this is the one that people will still be talking about years from now!” Other amazing new illusions include the spectacular opening in which guests watch as a life-size plastic mannequin transform into a living breathing Burton. Veins, skin, bones, hair and clothing materialize right before their eyes. Another new number called “The Magic Zone” is a one-act play of murder and mayhem where people continually disappear and reappear. In an attempt
to continually top his personal best, Burton has added several components
to the show including a newly installed $1 million lighting system and new
scenic treatments designed by award-winning
scenic designer, Douglas W. Schmidt. To celebrate 10 years of making magic together, Burton and the Monte Carlo plan to host a private anniversary party June 21 following the performance, which will showcase Burton’s fabulous changes. “Monte Carlo Resort & Casino is proud to host an evening honoring Lance Burton. Over the past decade, Lance has been a defining element of Las Vegas entertainment with a timeless presence that surpasses the trendy, ever-changing offerings of the destination,” said Randy Morton, president of Monte Carlo. “We couldn’t be happier that Lance has made his home at Monte Carlo.” ___ Michael Colyar’s Comedy Extravaganza!
